The New York Times Loves My T-Shirt

So I have this awesome t-shirt that has angry pink penguins wielding machine guns. (One of them is releasing a dove. It’s adorable) Lots of people ask me about the shirt, including someone at O’Hare Airport who thought it might make fellow travelers “uncomfortable” (hopefully) and a woman with a bible at my train stop who asked me if I was a terrorist. (clearly). I bought it at a store in Vancouver two years ago.

In their “Day Out” feature, the New York Times travel section gave the store — and its neighborhood — a nice shout out. The store is called Motherland and everyone should buy clothes from them, even though they are using American Apparel shirts now, so if you buy their shirt you are — by extension — sexually harassing a teenager.

It took me two years to realize that my shirt might be a commentary on global warming, which means that either the politics are stealth or I’m not very bright.
