Save the Best For Last.
Vanessa Williams you slut! Twenty-three years after being stripped of her Ms. America title because some naked-semi-hot-gay-action photos turned up in Penthouse, Vanessa Williams is my new guilty pleasure.
Starring on Salma Hayek’s telenovela adaption Ugly Betty, Williams is the best thing on a show that has its politics right. Who would imagine that a show owned by Disney, airing in the child-corrupting 8PM hour, would know the difference between a tranny and a drag queen and write it into the show? Or that ABC would offer up sympathetic portraits of immigration politics?
Williams — as the glamour-queen bitch diva — is in her comfort zone (pun intended!), bossing around the lickable Mark and scheming to marry the aging Bradford. (Played, for the record, by Alan Dale from The O.C. We’ve missed you since you died in Julie Cooper’s pool…)
Williams also spent half of last week’s episode doing it with ex-husband/current husband/former Laker Rick Fox, which is creepy but maybe 4% hot. Oh! And there’s a gay 12-year old. And realistic fallout from senseless urban violence! And Frederico from Six Feet Under sells sandwiches! Holy shit.
I don’t recommend much television, but you should watch. And in solidarity with Vanessa Williams you should download her “Little Drummer Boy” ringtone. Its the 9-11 of ringtones, in a big way.
