If you need it …

Had a wicked good brunch on Sunday at Counter, in the East Village. A couple friends of mine are mostly vegan, and it can be a hard scrape trying to find good/non-slop brunches that satisfy the vegans and the blood-lusters. (Gridskipper tried. Eh.) Anyway, Counter sat us right away (there were 9 of us including a baby!) poured us strong drinks and served up some hot, wet, delicious free-range eggs and veggie sausage that made my day. They could have been a little quicker on the coffee … and they included tip automatically, which I always but perhaps inexplicably resent, but if you find yourself in New York on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon you should give it a shot. Oh: Tuscan eggs and butternut squash soup? Say yes.

  1. Am I becoming a resident stickler commenter on your food posts?? I know it’s a tall order, but I didn’t find the Counter brunch to be…transcendent. The drinks came, like, seven hours after we sat down. They didn’t know who got what and auctioned the food off to us. The food itself was fine. (The little trio of “butters” for the muffins were amazing.) They didn’t really clear the table when we were finished and never refilled the coffee, despite the owner watching anxiously over everyone’s tables. I’m such a waiter adjudicator, sigh…takes one to know one, I guess! What we need are more decent veg restaurants so our pickins won’t be so damn slim. But! I will say that their interior design/architecture passed muster with me AND my architect husband with the eagle eyeball. Victory!

  2. I would be happy to give you the title of resident stickler!

I enjoyed Counter myself, although I can’t say my vegan french toast was perfect. I will give it points for ambition.

I found the service to be Ok, which is pretty high marks for the lower east side! It is also nice to go somewhere with a stroller and not have the waiter act like you shit in their apron pocket.
