New “right-wing MoveOn.org” has so much money they might be able to somehow send more emails than the real, left-wing MoveOn.org.
Spam alert! A bunch of crazies who used to work for President Bush (including his old press secretary, Ari Fleischer) started a group last summer called Freedoms Watch. Basically they want us to believe that the war is working, we should have lots more war, and that freedom is — as a great American leader once said — on the march. Aside from having an extremely gay logo, Freedom’s March has a shitload of money, and they’re not afraid to spend it:
Freedom’s Watch has loudly announced that there will be no limits to what it might do. From its $15 million summer ad campaign defending the Iraq strategy to its six-figure effort [bringing immigration] in the House special election in Ohio, the group has put Democrats on notice that its agenda will go far beyond the conservative principles of its largest financial backers.
What that means, in a nutshell, is a Spring, Summer and Fall full of totally misleading, completely terrifying and probably very effective ads trying to scare the shit out of American voters and push them into the shriveling, quaking arms of 174-year old John McCain. (The likely Republican nominee, in my opinion.)
This is bad news, and Freedom’s Watch has enough money to be effective — especially in local congressional races. Part of their aim is to serve as a conservative counterbalance to MoveOn.org. On the face that’s crazy — MoveOn has 3.5 million, democracy-loving members; Freedom’s Watch has 6 crazy, bomb-loving billionaires — but once they start running TV ads showing Barack Obama smuggling mexicans across the Texas border in his burka carrying a hissing, flaming Koran it may not much matter. These guys could be bad.
What can we do? (1) Throw a little cash at MoveOn, IVAW, or to the anti-war organization of your choice; (2) Be ready to respectfully debate your parents, siblings, distant friends and misguided loved ones when they call to tell you that Barack Obama wants to personally bomb Israel or local Congressman [Democrat] just sold your baby to illegals. Pinko will do its part, by mocking the font usage in Freedoms Watch print ads and making fun of Ari Fleicher’s gleaming bald head.
