Eliot, it’s not so bad.
Oh Eliot, we hardly knew you! But take heart: The sudden fall of Spitzer reminds us of two other “career-ending” political scandals that weren’t career enders at all.
Exhibit A: Jerry Springer. In the early 1970s, Jerry Spinger was an up and coming politico - a golden boy whose name was often uttered in the same sentence as the Kennedys. His first job was with RFK’s campaign, and Springer had a bright future. Then, he Spitzered: Springer got himself elected as a City Councilmember of SinCincinnati and then PAID FOR A PROSTITUTE WITH A PERSONAL CHECK. (The best part: he wrote “services” in the memo line.) Awesome.
See Eliot? It’s not soooo bad. There is always Exhibit B: Marion Barry. Barry was arrested smoking crack with a prostitute in a cheap hotel room; it really doesn’t get much worse than that. His reaction to the FBI storming the room: The infamous “bitch set me up” tirade Four years and one prison term later? Marion Barry was re-elected Mayor of Washington D.C.
