So I’m watching the live coverage of Eliot Spitzer being transported through New York with his entourage (MSNBC just said “escorts.” Ooops!) and they are doing an overhead shot of his car, O.J. style. Putting aside the prostitution and the laundering and the violation of the public trust: does the Governor of New York have to be hauled around in an SUV? A whole fleet of SUV’s? I’m serious: he was elected on promises to be the greenest Governor ever, we know SUV’s are bad, an SUV didn’t help New Jersey Governor Corzine from being shredded in a car crash last year, we know academically that they aren’t any safer, AND there are now hybrid SUVs out there which are at least a little better. The only reason left for the fleet of black SUVs is projecting an aura of masculinity and power, which I think is kind of a bad choice right now.
