McCaingerously Clever

John McCain has found a way to turn the total failure in Iraq into a positive for his Iraq-victory themed presidential campaign. From Reuters (via TPM):

Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Friday he fears that al Qaeda or another extremist group might attempt spectacular attacks in Iraq to try to tilt the U.S. election against him.

McCain, at a town hall meeting in this Philadelphia suburb, was asked if he had concerns that anti-American militants in Iraq might ratchet up their activities in Iraq to try to increase casualties in September or October and tip the November election against him.

“Yes, I worry about it,” McCain said.

You got that? If Iraq goes in the shitter, vote for the guy who is most directly involved in landing us in this mess. It only makes sense.

It should also be noted that General Petraeus (Betrayus? Betraitorist? Beatafetus?) said that “No one… feels that there has been sufficient progress by any means in the area of national reconciliation,” in Iraq. But come on now. Everyone knows Petraeus is totally in the tank for Obama!

  1. Ummhh … yeah. I’d imagine that Al Qaeda is more likely to cause trouble in order to tilt the election *FOR* John McCain. Bush has been an incredible recruiting tool for them, so why stop now with a Democratic President?

John Kerry says that he would have won in 2004 if it wasn’t for Osama bin Laden’s video broadcast two days before the election. He may be right … when middle America sees a scary brown guy on TV who wants to strike another terrorist attack, they stop thinking, start freaking out and vote for the “tough guy” who says he’ll protect them.

Fear works … because it causes people to act irrationally. And that’s why Hillary Clinton did that 3:00 a.m. ad — so that voters in Ohio and Texas vote for her out of fear. It’s a despicable and cynical tactic, but it works.

  2. It’s too bad Nader or McKinney can’t do an ad showing a little girl picking flowers and then a nuclear bomb go off. . .
