The “Insignificance” of Bill Richardson

speedy-gonzales.jpgBill Richardson, former U.S. Congressman, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, former U.S. Secretary of Energy and current governor of New Mexico has endorsed Barack Obama for President. An endorsement from a politician (and former competitor) with such an extensive resume should be a huge deal at this point in the campaign. There is only one problem. Bill Richardson is a Mexican.

Clinton strategist Mark Penn thinks the Richardson endorsement is insignificant, or rather he doesn’t think it’s a “significant endorsement in this environment.” Since the remaining contests don’t have large latino populations, an endorsement from a latino couldn’t possible mean anything, right?

This is poison.

This campaign has taken an extremely disturbing turn in the last few months. It has become commonplace to predict the performance of a particular candidate in a particular state based purely on the ethnicity (or gender) of the candidate. They have a word for this: racism.
