Edwards, Hitler, blah blah blah.

Edwards!I was psyched to see John Edwards endorse Barack Obama, largely because he is so lithe and sinewy committed to ending poverty, and because John Edwards is someone who can pull him to the left policy-wise and might make a killer Attorney General. But I was struck by the wording of his speech:

“There is one man who knows in his heart that it is time to create one America — not two — and that man is Barack Obama.”

He clearly gendered his money shot line, and that bothered me. He didn’t swipe at Clinton and say there was one “candidate” in the campaign who knows in his heart, etc. Maybe he was trying to be gracious, but it felt a little boys club to me and given this silly “sweetie-gate” scenario (I won’t go into it but click through to read if you like) I hope it won’t become a trend.

Also (and unrelated) this morning George Bush compared Barack Obama to a Nazi appeaser.

“Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before,” Bush said. “As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

Are we going there, really, already? HITLER? I thought Hitler was not off the table but like … you wait to throw that one down. Also does that mean that Barack Obama is now a Nazi as well as a Muslim as well as a black radical? I wish they would pick one.

  1. You forgot to mention that Edwards is the son of a millworker. Also, Chris Dodd will be A.G.. That is all.

  2. Seriously, Obama, never do that again. Never ever.

I think it should be pointed out however that he DID apologize:

“Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I’m calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn’t get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren’t the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.

“Second apology is for using the word ’sweetie.’ That’s a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next.”

  3. Say, is it my imagination, or does that Edwards photo bear a striking resemblance to Sean Bean’s villainous portrayl in Goldeneye? In addition to standing for attorney general, A.G. are also the initials of another bond villain, not to be confused with H.G., or h.j. What is this, a theme party? I’d give a link but I don’t have any.
