Will Ron Paul people derail the RNC?
I’m sorry but these people are just crazy. This article today quotes a bunch of Ron Paul supporters as seeing essentially no difference between Ron Paul and Ralph Nader, and that except for “abortion and guns” they embody essentially the same ideals. Uhm, kind of (no war, etc.) except for Ralph Nader and his supporters believe at the core of their being (and you won’t hear me defend Ralph Nader much, but here goes) that government is something that can be a force for good in people’s lives, which the Paul thing is about getting the government “out of our lives.” I find Libertarianism exhausting, and also morally dubious (I’ve believed my whole life that we have an obligation to help each other and care for the greater good) and so this article made me feel like everyone quoted is either stupid or crazy.
The only silver lining I see is that Ron Paul supporters may create such a side show at the Republican National Convention in September that it detracts from John McCain’s effort to “unify the party” or whatever around his platform of endless war and contempt for struggling homeowners. Will there be blood on the streets of Minneapolis!?
Two sidenotes: I do respect the Paul-ites for being so vigorously anti-war; also I’m a little worried about the fact that the coalition organizing to raise anti-war and anti-corporate issues at the Democratic National Convention has named itself “Recreate ‘68,” because do we want that?
Also, there is a new ice cream shop that just opened around the corner and I’m totally going in for some Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge! Lastly, it’s Fleet Week here in New York; if anyone has “welcomed” a sailor since Wednesday, please describe the encounter in the comments section in excruciating detail. Don’t ask don’t tell!

Wherefore art though Paultards? Does this mean the movement is over???
Actually, the GOP derailed the party over the past 8 years. Ron Paul supporters are the only ones trying to get it back on track, while the party establishment sits around saying “everything is ok folks”.
Same “conservative” leaders who brought us GWB.
So if there is anything that happens at the RNC, it will be Ron Paul supporters trying to put the train back on the rails it’s supposed to be on. Maybe the rest of the conservative people in America will wake up and help, it would go easily then.
See? Was that so hard? THANK YOU badmedia!
Couldn’t agree more on Liberatarianism, BW.
But really, Nader didn’t lose Gore the election. Gore lost Gore the election. He’s a chump in so many ways, but overall he is worth defending.
And lastly, protest a la ‘68 is what we want. Unless the only outcome is a few new Causes on Facebook. Uffff.
If you knew anything about politics you would be able to speak more intelligently about such issues.
Get your facts straight and then consider writing something worth reading.
Violet, my faith in the movement is restored. Thank you!
I do wish I knew more about politics, that’s true. Violet you’re welcome to write a guest post for us if you want! let us know, and school me please.
Also Ian I think that we should basically kill ourselves when we get our first invite to the “DNC Virtual Protest” facebook group. On the convention though, I’m just not sure if the violence et al in 1968 was effective. I don’t know. It’s a debate worth having.
@Ben - Agreed. Mostly I’m suggesting that large-scale street protest that represents an actual threat to the establishment is what’s needed, amongst other things. I think that ideas are generated from below, so working within the system is highly useful, but limiting.
We should probably just defer to Violet though.
