Three really bad people.

(1) Fuck John McCain for doing nothing when Hurricane Katrina happened, then creating this faux-civil-rights, straight-talk-express=freedom riders, now I care bullshit. This is amazing and awful and turns my stomach. (Henry, you found this for me!)

(2) Fuck Elizabeth Dole for knowing that she could lose her Senate seat in North Carolina and thus going on the air with the most divisive local issue there is: rounding up and arresting immigrants.

(3) Also fuck this guy but he lost but his ad is amazing! Stop the LESBIANS! And stop Jesse Jackson noooooooo!

He won the “Willie” award for Worst Political Advertisement, given by the Progressive think tank Growth & Justice. I found this on Pam’s House Blend, which I always forget I love but it’s a fabulous and sometimes a little dirty political blog, just like we like ‘em!

I love that Vernon Robinson ad … saw it when it first aired a couple years ago, and really laughed out loud when I realized that it was serious. Oy vey.

But what really cracks me up is how they misspelled “dyke.” I mean, these right wing moralizers have no idea about them homosexuals. Of course, they’re really jealous that we get all the fun and they don’t.

That twilight zone sounds great!

I fail to see what Senator McCain did that is offensive. Did he do less than Senators Clinton and Obama when Katrina hit? If Senator Obama were dancing in the video instead of Senator McCain would that be equally offensive to you?

Well, McCain didn’t do NOTHING. He was having his 69th birthday party with Pres. Bush at the time of the storm.

I think, Derek, the reality is that the video and advertisement indicate a commitment by Sen. McCain to struggling communities in New Orleans, and to poor black communities in general. The problem is that his platform just doesn’t bear that out. I don’t believe that his response to the economic crisis is even remotely adequate; he has almost no agenda for dealing with urban poverty; and specifically his response to Katrina was to vote in favor of privatizing much of the relief effort, which certainly hasn’t helped the folks in the video.

And yes, Obama and Clinton did do more. As Stirling said, McCain was literally as AWOL as George Bush — they were together at the time instead of manning the Government response.

Lastly, McCain’s record is very mixed on civil rights, stemming from a number of votes in the 80’s on apartheid and MLK birthday, etc. I know a lot about politics and visually the video is supposed to send the message “I care about civil rights.” It’s my feeling that neither his history nor his reality (the policies he’s running on) back that up.
