Overly Over (Almost)

I have been yelling and screaming (mostly to myself) about how ludicrous Hillary’s “popular vote” claims are. A fair estimation (Iowa, Nevada, Washington & Maine haven’t released any popular vote totals) puts Obama up by something like 44,605 votes. Granted, that’s not a terribly huge margin, but it does shoot a pretty big whole in Hillary’s only remaining argument. I’m not a math teacher or anything, but I think that being up by 44,605 votes means Obama is winning the popular vote. Well, I owe Hillary a bit of an apology here. I was missing how nuanced her assertions actually are.

Buried in her most recent (last?) campaign commercial is the claim “More Americans have voted for Hillary Clinton than anyone in primary history”. See what she did there? Through the clever use of semantics she is excluding the results from the caucus states. Very well played! That sentence could also be read to mean that more Americans have voted for Hillary Clinton than Czechs or Weimaraners or whatever.

Sure it’s misleading, but it’s accurate. Say Hill, if this whole politics thing doesn’t work out, I may be able to get you a job writing copy for credit card mailers.

Considering the above, Hillary Clinton is certainly acting like she is going to fight it out all the way to the convention. However, she appears to be sending other signals to her advance staff. Ben Smith is reporting that some of Hillary’s people have been getting emails telling them to head to New York for “a final day” Tuesday. This is a revelation for two reasons.

  1. New York is Hillary’s “home state” and would be the most likely place for a concessions speech.
  2. The advance staff is responsible for setting up campaign events prior to Senator Clinton’s arrival. Without an advance staff, Hillary can’t campaign.

So there you have it. Hillary Clinton is running a misleading and divisive “scorched earth” campaign that she will most likely end up conceding on Tuesday. If anyone can make any kind of god-damned sense out of this one, please leave me a comment below.

  1. Doesn’t matter any more. HRC is delivering her post-primary speech in NYC instead of either of the two states actually voting on Tuesday AND requesting that all of her staff turn in their expense reports…

  2. Not only that, but Bill is essentially signalling that this is over as well. From First Read

“‘I want to say also, that this may be the last day I’m ever involved in a campaign of this kind,’ the former president said at a town hall at the Milbank Visitor Center…’

  3. How’s Obama going to win the general election if his supporters keep pissing off Democratic women voters with this relentless trashing of Hillary?

  4. I find it shocking how little you think of Democratic women voters. Frankly, I am deeply offended by your comment. Barack Obama will win by drawing a sharp contrast with John McCain. I do not think Democratic women voters (many of whom already support Barack Obama BTW) will be so ignorant as to allow an anti-choice, pro war, anti-middle-class candidate like John McCain to waltz into the White House because I point out Hillary Clinton’s dishonest political ad.

  5. I’ve been deeply offended by a lot of the stuff written about Hillary on this and other blogs, and doubly so because it’s coming from Democrats and progressives. I expect that from Republicans, not my own party. I know Ben so I continue to stop by here from time to time, and I don’t think any of you have had one good thing to say about her. You guys don’t get it. This isn’t about me. Obama supporters have been all over just about every political blog or comment thread on every news site, posting insults and mocking a candidate who has a strong base of supporters, and they show no sign of abandoning her despite the media having written her off some time ago. I do take the insults a little personally because it’s painful to see this kind of vitriol thrown at the first woman candidate with a serious chance at the presidency. I have been going around myself kindly asking the Obama fans to stop doing it so we don’t lose the election, because I follow the Clintonista blogs and see how alienated and angry they are, and no one is hearing what I’m saying. Basically I don’t understand why the Photoshops mocking her and the posts interpreting everything she does in the worst possible light were necessary. I think, though, maybe it was not expected that anyone who actually likes and admires Hillary Clinton would visit here to say anything about it?
