We’re really, really important!

Over this past weekend two notable Americans passed away. One saved millions of lives with his sheer creativity, audacity and sewing skills. The other was a media guy. Guess which one is still in the news on Monday? Yup, FoxNews guy and former Bush Press Secretary Tony Snow. The other one? Did you even know? Dr. Michael DeBakey, father of cardiac and vascular surgery. He invented it. Literally. Cut people open, transplanted veins from their legs to their hearts (how do you have an idea like that?) and they miraculously started surviving heart attacks, strokes, advanced arteriosclerosis and on and on and on. He learned to sew from his mom… But his story only ran on radio for four hourly cycles.

So why is Tony Snow the bigger story? OK, he died too young from colon cancer. You knew who he was because he was on TV. But still, he was a two-bit cable news anchor/reporter and Presidential Press Secretary for less than a year. He got more coverage than Jesse Helms’ death for crying out loud (except on Pinko)!

TV people think that they are so important that they now determine the course of human history. They’re pretty sure that they won Obama the primary election for him and they’re pretty sure that we can’t live without them. So when one is lost, the eulogies, public mournings and blah blah blah go on forever. After all, if we can’t live without them, we oughta feel kind of crappy when one of them dies. Whatever. Let’s see if Motley Crue is playing on the rock station.

Well I’m happy that Dr. DeBakey lived to 99 years and that reporting of his death gave me the opportunity to learn about his contributions to society. Even it it didn’t last long enough in the news. I’m happy he learned to sew from his mom too.

  1. In their defense, they had lots of good tape of Snow. Also, Dr. Michael DeBakey has a face for radio…

  2. My friend Hillary just netted 47 points in her “Dead Pool” because Tony Snow died, so she was pretty stoked. The only way i can win now is if Haley Joel Osmont wraps a car around a tree.

  3. oh i get it — DeBakey only nets one point. Terrible. That’s so amazing he lived so long!
