Friday: Post-debate wrap. [Updated, with word cloud!]
PINKO DAILY BRIEFS: Last night was very significant. Makers Mark did not defeat me. I watched Sarah Palin be Ronald Reagan mostly clear-eyed. Who won? I’m not sure. She is a good debater and she did fine, but Biden did just fine too. I was disappointed that he didn’t craft a narrative or tie his digs on McCain to bigger themes. It was all procedural; vote after vote after vote, but never tying them to his being “out of touch” or angry, etc. So, it was fine — no harm done. Everyone should read this pithy, quick and fantastic James Fallows 4-point wrap up; that’s the best summary I’ve seen. Leah Renna also had a nice take on Biden’s moment discussing his first wife and family. Frankly if Palin can cart around that baby like a prop, Joe Biden can use and say whatever he wants. What’s next? Pinko has exclusive reaction later today from General George McClellan, pictured above left. A hint: he’s pissed.
UPDATE: So Shaun and Stirling make good points in the comments asking how I can say she’s a good debater. As Shaun noted, she was an empty vessel (shhhh) and as Claire emailed me this morning it was just “word confetti.” You’re all right, assuming that these things are watched in an intelligent and rational way. But when you consider that millions of people watched with no prior understanding of the campaign, some of that folksy shit is very effective. The measure of the economy is down on the soccer field? We know that’s bullshit. But it seems to some people like she knows her stuff. I’m not saying she’s a good person; I’m saying that, like Reagan, she is a good debater because she can glaze over what people don’t want to hear, she stayed repeatedly on message as a surrogate for McCain, and she spoke at times in ways that were easier to understand than Biden. That’s my case.
After the jump I have added, courtesy Kagro X, the Palin “word cloud” for the debate. Proving Shaun, Claire and Stirling right and disproving myself the winning word is ALSO.

How is Sarah Palin a good/competent debater? Listening to pundits and reading this post, what standard is being used here? She just repeated talking points (she’s essentially an empty vessel), she was very nervous, and she got caught up in spewing one folksy saying after another.
Dog-gonnit, she’s a shitty debater.
I’m with Shaun. She was a train wreck. Just because she didn’t use the n-word or laugh when Biden talked about his dead wife doesn’t make her a good debater.
We will have to see what people think when the polls start to come out. Obviously I am not always the best judge of what Joe Sixpack (AKA Drunk Hockey Mom) thinks is okilee dokilee.
