Scary Times.
Writer Charles London, a friend and sometimes Pinko contributor, has covered some of the violence and unrest in Kenya and Rwanda. And the tone and tenor of the Presidential election here coming from the McCain campaign remind him a great deal of both of those situations, which of course turned tragic.
One of the first things that the Hutu Power movement did in Rwanda was to broadcast a message over and over again that the Tutsis were foreigners and traitors … Once that envrionment had been created, all it took was one national tragedy … to set off a paroxysm of violence.
Charles notes that our own country, of course, has a history (a recent history) of race riots and conflict, and asks how if McCain won he could possibly govern the large percent of the population who voted for a man he branded a terrorist and a traitor. Mostly I’ve scoffed at the outrageousness and desperation of the campaign, but the tone over the last few days has kept me up at night thinking about news alerts and crisis and CNN, and not in a good Anderson Cooper way. Do give this whole piece a read.
