Obama embedding ads in video games?

(1) This is awesome. (2) They DO have shitloads of money! (3) Do these people vote? Like, do they leave the house? Gamers unite and hit the comments section! From GamePolitics.com:

“We’ve only gotten one report of this … but an Xbox Live gamer who goes by Dragunov765 has posted photos of what appear to be in-game ads for Barack Obama. Dragunov says he came across the ads while playing Burnout Paradise earlier this week and posted them on his Rooster Teeth journal page.”

I do wonder if it’s the campaign doing this or an adventurous programmer. Or if we’re all in second life right now and don’t know it. If it’s true, it’s fantastic.

  2. Ok, first of… gamepolitics.com! The fact that that site even exists fills me with the weirdest type of pride.

Secondly, I think this is actually very significant. It’s not just that they are targeting gamers with ads. It’s that they are really, truly going for it.

In game ads have been around for awhile now, but you rarely see things outside of razors and deodorant being advertised on them. Basically only products that have such a huge media budget that they can literally put their ad everywhere.

What this says to me is that Obama isn’t just outspending McCain. They may be outspending Gillette too.

  3. how does it work can he change the ad week by week?

  4. It’s just like normal web-based advertising.. You create a campaign with a target audience and a run length, then the ad images are distributed through the network to your audience. The ads appear on a variety of games depending on which agency the game developer has signed with.

I’m not sure of the exact time frames, but I imagine as it’s all digital they can be rather arbitrary, so I think it could easily change from week to week.
