The Nerd Vote

Metafliter’s Matt Haughey has laid out his ten-point platform for the nerd vote, which is not only a great assessment of some of the infrastructure and Information policy challenges our next leaders will need to address, but a wonderful platform for a new geek party.

Some key points–Broadband everywhere, renewed commitment to science, revamping transportation policy, reassessing copyright law, and Open Source government. (It’s rumored an Obama administration will appoint an internet “czar,” and that he may do a web version of FDR’s “fireside chats.”)

Cory Doctorow digs it. Wired Magazine has a post up on where the candidates stand on some of these issues. On some of the vital issues-Broadband access, in which the US is lagging way behind, Net Neutrality, which is the last frontier in the battle against total corporate control of information, and Green Tech, Obama is the better choice. There are entire engineering and computer science departments at Universities who tech savy Obama volunteers should target for persuasion. Once you throw Librarians into the mix, you’ve got what could and should be the nerd landslide for the Democratic party, with the appropriate outreach.

  1. I think the fact that McCain was on the commerce comitee and that my cellphone service totally sucks are both totally related.
