The gay marriage fight in California. [updated]

We've been following some about Proposition 8 in California, the anti-gay marriage amendment that is up in the air right now. It's been a scary and interesting campaign, from an influx of Mormon money and volunteers to a lot of tensions involving alleged (and real) black and latino homophobia. The intersection of race, religion and sexuality is always a difficult place to be and Proposition 8 is tied up in all of it. PinkoPaul writes from San Francisco with a twist on things:
Yesterday, I received an extremely dishonest mailer supporting California's Proposition 8 -- which falsely implies that Barack Obama, who opposes Prop 8, supports it.On a lighter note, the mailer quoted a black minister which the Prop 8 camp will undoubtedly claim was just a typo, but can more accurately be described as a Freudian slip. Dr. Phillip Goudeaux says Prop 8 is vital for anyone who cares about promoting the "scared" institution of marriage. That's right ... they are afraid of gay people getting married. Update: A friend sent me this piece from Salon, "Proposition 8 vs. Black Homophobia" by LaDoris Cordell, a African-American lesbian hopeful that an "Obama Effect" won't kill gay marriage in California. It's a good overview of some of the interesting politics at play.
