A beautiful night in the making.

Pat Buchanan just said “hit the bottom.” That’s pretty gross. Hit the bottom, work the middle. That was McCain’s strategy. And while Buchanan is saying it about McCain (he hit bottom), Barack Obama is the one who really hit the bottom (of the economic scale) and worked the middle (of the electorate) in the sexy way, vote-wise. He spoke to the truth and the ideas that American wanted. He hit the hot button populist — yes populist — issues that people in America really believe in. And as much as the media wants to chalk this up to the intangible of the economic crisis, this victory tonight is about an American belief in the power of government, in the idea of government as a force for change, and in, yes, liberal, principles.

The result? Are you watching the millions of people in Grant Park? That video from Harlem? This race isn’t called yet but tonight is headed someplace beautiful, and it’s not an “anti” vote. It’s FOR something different, and for a real agenda. And as the thrill climbs up Chris Matthews leg, it’s fun to watch.
