Doris Kearns Goodwin is just freaking the fuck out right now.

She wrote the now-ubiquitous Team of Rivals. On my plane ride home I saw her on three different channels in an hour! All because Barack Obama is going to appoint ... yes,  a team of rivals to his cabinet. Or rather one rival, so far, maybe, if her husband gives up the goods on his international dealings. At this point I think Hillary would be a fine Secretary of State, but why can't he just release a list of library donors and foundation funders? If they've been resisting for two years there must be some nasty presidential library donors on there, no? RELEASE THE LIST.  Anyway, Doris Kearns Goodwin is that woman ordering the pizza with the extra anchovies right now and Barack Obama is Patrick Dempsey. Or something. Team of Rivals is actually a great book (and her FDR biography is killer) but this has gone too far.

  1. When I was a precocious kid in an NPR-listening, New York Times-reading household, Doris Kearns Goodwin was somewhat of an icon for me.

But in 1998, she starred in a campaign commercial for Al “Checkbook” Checchi — the CEO of Northwestern Airlines who was trying to buy the California Governors race, and was annoying the airwaves with buckets full of money in a dull and uninspiring Democratic nomination. (Can’t believe I voted for Gray Davis in that race as the lesser of three evils!)

It was shortly revealed that Doris Kearns Goodwin was on the Board of Directors for Northwest Airlines, so her agenda was pretty blatant in that regard. I lost all faith for her when she did that.

As for Al Checchi, what the hell ever happened to him after he lost that race?? To be honest, I don’t give a shit.
