God I just can’t stand this guy.

Pardon me while I totally politics-nerd wonk out for a minute, but here goes. Terry McAuliffe was the head of the Democratic National Committee during their pre-Howard Dean, top-down, pick a handful of races and ignore the rest of the country, corporate years. He was one of the architects of Hillary Clinton's campaign for President last year, and has been a nearly life-long political operative. His background is almost the anti-Obama, working to raise money inside the political structure but holding no real experience organizing communities or pushing for policy change. Now he's decided to run for Governor of Virginia. Now I don't live in Virginia, so perhaps it's none of my business. I do know that some friends I trust are buzzing about Brian Moran, who is also running and has signed on a number of Dean allies to help fun his campaign, and that he's considered a more progressive and way better choice.
Honestly though what really bothers me is McAuliffe's voice. I can't stand how he says "jobs" and he says it over and over again in this commercial. Maybe I'm just reacting to the voice because McAuliffe has a general air of douchebaggery about him, or maybe I'm flinching at "jobs" because on his website and in the commercial I don't sense any particularly innovative way to create them, just platitudes. Read the platform - it's all air. Anyway, this guy has always reminded me of the neighbor you just end up inviting to the cookout because you see him at the mailbox, and by the next year he's totally planning the cookout. Watch this ad and dare to disagree! Ew.
Ideas!? those aren’t ideas! “These are just some of the ideas I’ve heard from you in Hampton Roads.” Those ideas include “invest in renewable energy,” as if some guy at a town hall meeting was like “hey, invest in renewable energy” and McAuliffe was like “WOW I’ve never fucking thought of that, what a great idea.” Or “Keep our carriers here” which is basically saying “we would like it if, as governor, you would make sure our jobs don’t move to another state.” That’s not an idea. That’s competence. Guh.
