As we've been covering extensively, the House of Representatives passed the omfg $819 billion bonanza economic recovery package yesterday. Now it goes to the Senate, which offers some opportunities to improve the bill. One highlight of the plan passed yesterday is the unprecedented level of funding for renewable energy and sustainability: there is $500 million for a federal green jobs act; $6.2 billion for weatherizing homes and buildings to save energy; and funding to literally double - double! - America's renewable energy capacity in just three years. These are provisions that need to survive the senate vote; moreover, there are chances in the next couple of weeks to improve the bill as well. Since I KNOW you're totally looking for a hot hot way to get involved in this whole thing, here are two things you can do:
More involved? Obama today deployed for the first time his Organizing for America advocacy network; not Obama himself, of course, but the people maintaining his massive list. It's an interesting moment - this is the first test of his grassroots muscle (shh) and the first peek we get at what becomes of all the millions of emails and thousands of volunteers from the campaign. Their ask? It's higher commitment than signing a petition. Obama would like people to host and attend Economic Recovery House Parties. Any takers? If you host one in New York Pinko will come! I know that doesn't sound fun - an economic recovery house party - but we'll propose some cocktails and you can invite that hot neighbor you've had an eye on. Do it!
Also I'm totally open to the fact that some of our readers don't support this and either (a) think Obama has sold out the left or (b) you think tax cuts are the way to go, since that worked so well over the last eight years. Anyway if you think I'm shilling shamelessly for Obama than write us a piece or leave a comment or make fun of me for going to an economic recovery house party.
